Significance of Nageshwar Jyotirlinga

Mythological Story of Aundha Nagnath, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga

According to Hindu mythology, there was once a powerful demon named Daruka who, along with his wife Daruki, troubled the sages and innocent people in the forest called Darukavan. He had received a blessing, from Goddess Parvati, which gave him great powers. Using his powers, Daruka began to misuse his strength and created fear everywhere.

The sages and devotees prayed to Lord Shiva for protection. Listening to their prayers, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a Jyotirlinga and destroyed the demon, Daruka. Since the Lord manifested here as the protector against the serpent demon, he came to be known as Nagnath or Nageshwar – the Lord of Serpents.

It is believed that this is the place where Lord Shiva resides eternally in the form of a Jyotirlinga to protect his devotees from evil forces. The name “Nagnath” also comes from the word “Nag” (serpent) and “Nath” (Lord), making him the Lord of Serpents.
